Beginning and ending in Vancouver, a scenic drive takes you through the rugged coastline of the Pacific Rim National Park. It’s a great place to base yourself in a wilderness lodge along the coast and spend the weekend exploring the beaches and rainforests or remote islands of Clayoquot Sound.

No doubt, Vancouver Island is the best destination for a fall staycation in Canada, with excellent natural beauty and vibrant foliage in autumn. The city is perfect for a scenic drive through a park like the Pacific Rim National Park, immersing yourself in breathtaking landscapes and the serene ambiance.

The Pacific Rim National Park Reserve is a magnificent amalgam of mountains, coastal rainforest, wild beaches, and marine landscapes that stretch over 125 km. The unique park consists of three sections – the Long Beach, the West Coast Trail, and the Broken Group of Islands. These sections feature sandy beaches, island archipelagos, vital archaeological sites, and temperate rainforests.

Exploring Long Beach

The Long Beach is the most popular of the Pacific Rim National Park’s sections and also the most accessible. As its name suggests, Long Beach includes a long span of wild, windswept sand and rocky points stretching about 30 km from Tofino to Ucluelet. The beach also houses snow-covered peaks of the Mackenzie Range during the colder months, providing a scenic backdrop.

Behind the beach is a thick, lush canopy of coastal rainforest that you could visit for rare Instagrammable photos. The beach features rare white-packed sand that you’ll hardly find anywhere else, plus beautiful, sea-sculpted driftwood and islets and rock pools oozing with aquatic life.

What’s more about this popular beach? Long Beach is notable for its wildlife, with more marine species than any other temperate area worldwide along its BC coastline. Not to forget the minor stuff in tidal pools like starfish, sponges, and the like. Meanwhile, the beach doesn’t starve of larger aquatic animals like sea lions and whales.

If you visit here in October and November, then expect to view migrating birds like Canadian geese, black brants, and pintails. And when the weather is fairer, the beach welcomes many beachcombers, clam diggers, anglers, surfers, canoeists, windsurfers, and divers.

Of course, the water is typically too cold for tourists to dive in without a wet suit, as rip currents and straying lumps of driftwood around the waves can make swimming potentially dangerous. That said: avoid picking up shells as souvenirs, as it’s against the site’s regulations.

The West Coast Trail

Have you ever craved walking some of the best walks the continent offers? The West Coast Trail, one of the continent’s most classic walks, is a great place to be. The West Coast Trail (WCT) begins 5 km south of Bamfield and travels over 75m to Port Renfrew. Of course, it’s no ‘walk in the park;’ you want to walk through the trail only if you have experience walking longer distances and using proper fitness equipment.

Walking completely through the trail would take six to eight days on average. If you intend to spend some days exploring this unique trail, you want to carry your own food and prepare for the thick, soaking forests, treacherous stretches, and adverse weather conditions like rain.

Plan your visit to WCT between May and September (because that’s only when the Park opens the trail). July and August are the driest of the six months, during which wardens patrol the trails and locals offer to ferry tourists (for a fee) across some wider rivers along the trail.
