First opened in 1889, the landmark building of The Gladstone Hotel is Toronto’s oldest operational hotel. After a large restoration project led by Hotel President Christina Zeidler in 2005, the hotel was transformed into a new hub of art, culture and community while preserving both the Victorian architecture and original fixtures of the building and in a open community environment. The vintage aesthetic of the exposed brick, high ceilings and Victorian windows provide the perfect backdrop for rotating exhibitions while the functional event spaces have held a variety of live events, conferences, performances, private events, weddings and more.
Committed to being a leader in environmental sustainability, The Gladstone Hotel has developed their practices around using environmentally sustainable products, dramatically reducing consumption, recycling and composting waste. The hotel is also dedicated to their environmental accountability initiatives by installing green roofs on the upper win and lower south east wing of hotel as well as a green wall in the main stairwell, using 90% non-toxic in-house cleaners, and donating all gently used soaps and locations produced by a local farmer for hotel rooms to the nearby Good Shepperd Centre.
Every room at The Gladstone Hotel is different, as each room represents a different artist’s vision. “Why the @#&! do you paint? is the 1st annual group painting exhibition at the Gladstone Hotel which explores why so many of us paint. The first year subtitled Thick and Juicy looks at the act of moving wet materials across a variety of supports to create illusions, affect surfaces, and open up discourses. The work in this exhibition begins to explore what can be accomplished with paint that other materials are less capable of achieving.”
