During our second day of our Finger Lakes road trip, we drove further west to Auburn, New York. Located on the north end of Oswaco Lake, Aubrun is a quaint city that is home to some of the very famous residents in American history. Harriet Tubman‘s house is located just a few minutes down the road from downtown Aurburn to help celebrate her contributions to the Underground Railroad and her legacy throughout American history.
For the history lovers, be sure to visit the Seward House Museum in the home of William H. Seward, who served as NYS Senator, the Governor of NYS, a U.S. Senator, a presidential candidate, and then Secretary of State under Presidents Abraham and Lincoln and Andrew Johnson.
The beautiful glasswork at the Willard Memorial Chapel allows guest to see some of the rare works of Louis C. Tiffany and the Tiffany Glass and Decoration Co. in what is said to be the only complete and unaltered Tiffany chapel known to exist.
For lunch, we had a taste of one of the many craft breweries that have been popping up in the Finger Lakes region. Prison City Pub & Brewery is known for their casual pub-style menu and unique small batch seasonal brews. Housed in what was once Auburn’s historic Armory, the pub pays tribute to its history in its jail inspired decors.
Drive along Route 90 through the scenic byway to Aurora where you will find yourself at the Mackenzie-Childs, LLC estate. Known across the country for their hand decorated ceramic and home furnishings, this 65-acre property overlooking Cayuga Lake allows you to tour their truly one-of-a-kind home furnishings at their store and in their whimsically decorated farm house.
If you’re travelling with a family, take the extra drive down to Cortland, New York for a little adventure at central New York’s largest ski resort, Greek Peak Mountain Resort. While the ski resort is not open during the summer months, enjoy the 41,000 square foot indoor water park or drop by the Adventure Center for a chance to go zip lining along the trees or go for a ride on their Mountain Coaster.
